A TRIBUTE TO KRYSTAL

OUR TRIBUTE TO KRYSTAL
Our beautiful “Krystal passed away at the young age of 6 years old. After Dolly passed away in 2017 we waited a while to get another Maltese and contacted the same breeder that we got Dolly from. We got Krystal when she was a year old and thought that she would be with us for a long long time.
Unfortunately, we did not have any idea that she would have so many health problems. At a young age, she developed periodontal disease and we had to take her to a specialist to treat her condition. From the day that we got her, we brushed her teeth daily and groomed her to keep her beautiful white coat silky.
Each year we took her to a specialist to treat her condition and over the last four years she had to have a lot of teeth extracted, but we continued to do this to keep her in good health. She was active and playful and loved to run outside to catch her ball and bring it back to us.
In January 2023 she developed seizures and after several visits to our vet we started to give her phenobarbital, while she would still have a seizure with several adjustments in her dose we thought that she could continue to have a healthy life. In August she had a Gran Mal seizure and it caused her to go blind and unsteady on her legs. During this time we noticed that she would walk around the furniture from one area to another and she would walk up to a wall and just stand there. We researched why this was happening and we found that this condition is called Forebrain Dysfunction.
Dr. Millikan who has taken care of Daisy, Dolly, and now Krystal has been excellent. Dr. Frickie at the same clinic is now taking care of Krystal and she said that she has a brain tumor, while we could get more tests done or possible surgery we agreed to try to keep Krystal comfortable and on her medication. Krystal continued to walk around the house for hours and finally was so tired that she would go to sleep. It was at this time that we had to make the difficult decision to put her to sleep and out of her pain and discomfort.
The house is empty and quiet and since we have always had a dog we plan to find another Maltese in the future.
